Glenys loved seeing the signs that said moose crossing...she said "What is the matter with them....here they are promising me moose and never delivering." I had to admit that we never did see any moose in all of our travels. But the sign sure made a nice spot to take a photo of Glenys.
The town of Newport is one of those quaint little New England townships that are always on the postcards that you buy in the tourist shops. It is located on the western side of the state and is even by New Hampshire standards tiny. The village center is the site of their annual winter carnival. Here you can see some of the townspeople skating on the frozen over town common. The small red building at the left is a skate rental shop operated by the town.
Some of the things that you can expect to see at a winter carnival are snow and ice sculptures. Here Glenys and I are standing in front of a snowsculpture in the shape of a dragon. The whole of it is about 18 feet in lenght and has a height of 7 feet at it's highest. The sculptor took our picture with his creation and told us that it took him several weeks to create this masterpiece.
The road back from Newport is lined by many small brooks and streams. There was one spot in particular that seemed to fascinate Glenys. This is where the moose crossing photo was taken. The stream that is in this photo wanders back and forth under the road and offers lovely views like this all along it's course. The risk in taking a photo this close to the brook is that you can never tell where the shore ends and the ice above the water begins. By the time you have discovered that you have gone too far you are hip deep in freezing cold water.
